Freedom Oaks is a luxury boutique horse retirement farm solely devoted to retirement care. Located in north central Florida in the 'Horse Capital of the World' of Ocala. Freedom Oaks is an approved equine retirement facility by the United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA). Freedom Oaks is not a horse rescue farm or a non-profit horse sanctuary and do not accept donated horses.
Freedom Oaks offers pasture boarding for retired horses at $1,250 per month. Pasture horses are fed morning and afternoon in individual feeding enclosures, eyes are cleaned and they are checked twice daily and treated or medicated if necessary. Horses are groomed and washed regularly. Freedom Oaks also offers limited stall board with turnout for high care retired horses at $2,500 per month. Monthly cost excludes veterinary and dental costs, farrier costs, special medications and supplements.
When performance horses arrive at Freedom Oaks farm they are transitioned from stall board with turnout to pasture once they have settled in and been introduced to pasture mates one by one in an unhurried manner in a safe and controlled environment.
Set on 250 acres, Freedom Oaks is one of the beautiful pristine and picturesque farms in Ocala with Spanish moss covered mature Live Oak trees, well maintained pastures with four rail fencing. Every pasture has individual enclosures where horses are fed and checked twice daily. The owners passion for happy, healthy horses fuels them to stay current on nutritional trends formulated by their equine nutritionist to ensure safe, nutritional feeds. Spacious run-in shelters provide protection in inclement weather. Fly masks and blankets are staples for the horses depending on their individual needs and the season.
The farm is owned and managed by Gary & Pauline Hartogh, they have many years combined horse experience, they oversee the daily running of the farm and the care of the horses. The farm staff are knowledgeable in the care of retired horses and the challenges they face as the years advance, such as arthritis, Equine Cushing's disease and EOTRH. They have the dedicated support of Dr Justin Phillips, DVM and his team at Equine Medical Center of Ocala, providing premier equine veterinary services and specialty hospital. The equine veterinary nutritionist ensures that the senior horses are getting the best possible nutrition based on their health and age. Their skilled farrier is an expert in hoof care, barefoot horses are trimmed and balanced every 4-5 weeks and a few horses have front shoes.
